Wed June 3rd

I went for a run this morning to the splash pad pool. Some ladies from our ward were swimming at the pool and beckoned us to take a dip. We didn't have our suits or anything but we decided to cool off for a bit anyways. Lisey wore a borrowed swim diaper and borrowed sunscreen and had a blast swimming around half naked.  Link was ready for a nap, so be wasn't quite so happy. Luckily he was able to fall asleep in my arms so in the end it was overall very fun.

I did some more packing while Link took his nap. And then I got ready for Ella's 504 meeting.

The 504 meeting was very insightful. We found out that Ella has dyslexia and that's why she's been having a hard time learning to read and write. Honestly I'm not sure how to feel yet. I've suspected it for a while, so it's not a total shock, but I'm still not sure how I feel about it. I guess we'll just go with the saying "come what may and love it ".

It's never fun learning that your child has a disability but it's a relief to know that she's going to get some great help in school for it. I don't like to even use the word disability, although it is classified that in Texas. It's more like she learns in a different way and the teachers are going to make sure that they are aware of it and they help her learn in that different way.

It's very interesting how they determine a child has dyslexia. There's all these factors that go into it and they tested on several different things. First they check to see if there's a deficit in reading and writing. Then they check the child's IQ to make sure that they are overall smart enough that they should be on a higher level (Ella was well above average on this test). There's a lot of other factors too but those are the main ones. The 504 will carry with her to any school she goes to and can even help her get extra time on the ACT and help with notes in college. I'm grateful they have programs like this to help kids with different learning ablilities.
